When Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery returned to American Idol for the reunion special broadcast on May 2, 2022, the country ballad “When You Say Nothing at All” connected the performance to an earlier chapter of their friendship.
Viewers remembered Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery as the teenagers who reached the final two in 2011. Scotty McCreery had been 17 when he won. Lauren Alaina had been 16 when she finished second. Nearly eleven years later, the former finalists were back together for the closing performance of The Great Idol Reunion.
A Surprise Guest in Los Angeles
Almost a decade before that television reunion, Lauren Alaina had brought Scotty McCreery onto another Los Angeles stage.
On May 22, 2012, Lauren Alaina was opening for Sugarland at the Greek Theatre. During the set, Lauren Alaina surprised the audience by welcoming Scotty McCreery for a duet of “When You Say Nothing at All,” the song audiences knew through recordings by Keith Whitley and Alison Krauss.
Both singers were beginning their lives as touring recording artists. Lauren Alaina was on the road with Sugarland, while Scotty McCreery was opening shows on Brad Paisley’s Virtual Reality Tour. Their careers had taken them onto separate concert bills, but that evening gave them another opportunity to sing together.
The following day, Lauren Alaina publicly thanked Scotty McCreery on Twitter for coming and singing, adding a compliment about how Scotty McCreery had sounded.
Voices Audiences Had Heard Together Before
Their history as duet partners reached back into the competition itself. During the Top 11 results show in 2011, Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery sat on stools and performed Randy Travis’s “I Told You So.” Their eventual meeting in the finale was still ahead.
That earlier performance gives the 2022 reunion another point of connection for longtime viewers: these were voices audiences had heard together before either teenager knew how the season would end.
The Last Performance of the Reunion
For the prerecorded 2022 special, Scotty McCreery began “When You Say Nothing at All” with the opening verse. Lauren Alaina took the second verse before the two voices joined in harmony.
From the judges’ table, Luke Bryan spoke about how rarely touring country performers had opportunities to watch one another sing. The reunion had given Luke Bryan a chance to listen.
“I was just like enthralled, a fan, just sitting back and listening,” Luke Bryan said.
