Willie Nelson paid for the burial of Billy Joe Shaver’s only son. When Billy Joe Shaver later tried to repay the money, Willie Nelson refused to accept it. But that was only part of what Willie Nelson did for an old friend during one of the hardest periods of Billy Joe Shaver’s life.
The story began on New Year’s Eve 2000, when Eddy Shaver died at just 38 years old. Eddy Shaver was more than Billy Joe Shaver’s son. For years, Eddy Shaver had been the guitarist standing beside Billy Joe Shaver, helping create the distinctive sound of their father-and-son recordings under the name Shaver.
Billy Joe Shaver had already lost wife Brenda Shaver and mother Victory Shaver in 1999. Now, less than two years later, Billy Joe Shaver was facing another devastating loss.
The New Year’s Eve Show That Willie Nelson Wouldn’t Let Billy Joe Shaver Face Alone
On December 31, 2000, Billy Joe Shaver had a performance scheduled at Poodie’s, a club near Willie Nelson’s home outside Austin, Texas.
Under ordinary circumstances, Eddy Shaver would have been a familiar presence alongside Billy Joe Shaver. But that night, the guitarist was gone, and Billy Joe Shaver couldn’t locate the musicians needed for the performance.
Willie Nelson stepped in.
Rather than leave Billy Joe Shaver to manage the evening alone, Willie Nelson gathered musicians and helped put together a band. Willie Nelson then performed for most of the night, while Billy Joe Shaver joined the musicians to sing occasionally.
In a July 2005 interview with Terry Gross on NPR’s Fresh Air, Billy Joe Shaver remembered Willie Nelson encouraging the performance with a simple message: “Get back on the horse.”
After the show, Willie Nelson took Billy Joe Shaver home, where the longtime friends spent the night talking. Billy Joe Shaver said the friendship dated back to 1955.
Willie Nelson Helped With More Than Music
The help didn’t stop when the evening ended.
During that same 2005 interview, Billy Joe Shaver revealed that Willie Nelson had given financial assistance during the difficult period following Eddy Shaver’s death. Billy Joe Shaver was struggling financially, and Willie Nelson covered the cost of Eddy Shaver’s burial.
Later, Billy Joe Shaver received money from Sony and attempted to repay Willie Nelson. Willie Nelson would not accept the repayment.
Billy Joe Shaver spoke about the gesture with unmistakable gratitude. The financial help mattered, but so did the friendship behind it. Willie Nelson had offered practical support when Billy Joe Shaver needed it most.
Why Willie Nelson Believed Billy Joe Shaver Needed the Stage
In May 2006, Terry Gross interviewed Willie Nelson and played an excerpt from Billy Joe Shaver’s earlier account. Willie Nelson was asked why returning to the stage had seemed so important.
Willie Nelson explained that performing had often helped clear the mind during difficult periods. Willie Nelson believed that being around musicians, friends, and fans could help Billy Joe Shaver through that particular evening.
There was a personal reason behind that understanding. Willie Nelson had also experienced the death of a son. After that loss, Willie Nelson continued with a scheduled engagement in Branson, Missouri, believing that performing was better than withdrawing from the world.
Willie Nelson recalled that many people at the New Year’s Eve show seemed to know what Billy Joe Shaver had experienced. The audience, Willie Nelson believed, understood why being among friends and fans mattered that night.
Those comments added something important to Billy Joe Shaver’s account. Willie Nelson wasn’t simply filling in for an absent band. Willie Nelson was drawing on personal experience to help a friend through an extraordinarily difficult day.
The Music Billy Joe Shaver and Eddy Shaver Left Behind
One of the most meaningful reminders of the father-and-son partnership remains “Live Forever,” released on the 1993 album Tramp on Your Street.
In an earlier interview, Billy Joe Shaver explained that Eddy Shaver had created the melody. Billy Joe Shaver carried that melody for months before finding the words, and Eddy Shaver also contributed to the lyrics.
The two musicians also completed The Earth Rolls On before Eddy Shaver’s death. Released in 2001, the album included “Blood Is Thicker Than Water,” a duet reflecting the complicated but enduring bond between father and son.
Billy Joe Shaver continued performing after that New Year’s Eve. Other friends, including Kinky Friedman, encouraged Billy Joe Shaver to keep working.
Yet Willie Nelson’s actions remained especially memorable. Years later, Billy Joe Shaver could still describe the night Willie Nelson assembled a band, the conversation afterward, and the burial expenses Willie Nelson quietly took care of.
For longtime country music fans, the story offers something beyond the songs these two Texas musicians gave the world. It shows how a friendship that began decades earlier became a source of real support when Billy Joe Shaver faced the loss of Eddy Shaver.
